Detailed Description
Ground Floor
As you enter through the slide away barn doors into the ground floor lobby, you instantly travel back in time into the large open lounging space. There are no interior walls apart from the bathroom on the ground floor and when the rear patio overhead door is open, you can see clear across and out the other end of the house. The center of the room is anchored by the authentic Fisher cast iron wood burning stove designed to heat the entire building. The exposed timber post and beam-style construction and antique and rustic finishes and décor defines the ambience of the house. The solid wooden timbers, old fashioned cantina-style lantern lighting, rustic finish ceiling fans, stained concrete flooring and furred wooden plank walls create the warm and exciting feeling as if you are arriving to an old fashioned cantina where old world explorers bunked prior to embarking on adventurous expeditions. The large open kitchen area is functionally designed to serve many while acting as an extension of the lounging area for informal meals or casual entertainment space. The kitchen is fully equipped with modern appliances and then some, with two refrigerators, an oven and two dishwashers. But to add to the experience, here you can begin to appreciate the effort and detail to create an authentic old-fashioned style living experience with the hanging old cast iron cookware, vintage style appliances and even the serving dishes resemble old fashioned dishware.

The ground floor bathroom is revealed behind an old fashioned prairie home door and accented by the vintage porcelain tub and custom built décor rack in the latrine that displays antique trinkets and bottles that hide secret stories about the days of old. Adjacent to the broad stairs leading up to the second floor, a quiet reading space offers repose and a large book cabinet filled to the rim with novels that guests are welcome to read or even trade with their own favorites. If you take a book, please leave another one for others to enjoy.

The ground floor also harbors the stacked washer and dryer, cleverly hidden behind one of the old fashioned doorways and plenty of fun board games are available and found within the drawers of the old fashioned chest and drawers in the dining area, plus a pool table and dart board for even more enjoyment. To add to the uniqueness of the space, a large overhead door can be rolled open to reveal sliding screen doors that open onto an outdoor covered patio signatured by the large `Seven Timbers` sign. This doorway opens the ground floor space even further to allow for an abundance of fresh mountain air and light and is perfect for staging outdoor entertainment, dining or just plain lounging. There is a large wooden deck off the dining area with a gas grill, Adirondack chairs and table made especially for outdoor cooking, gathering and lounging. The deck looks overlooks the thick woodland landscape and it is said you can almost feel the spirits of the old world Indians and explorers that used to migrate through these mountains.

Second Floor
As you walk up the broad and gently rising stairwell, you pass thick wooden beams displaying old fashioned grinders and other interesting features and transition from the cantina motif into a ranch house ambience mixed with an old fishing town nautical theme like you might see in a sleepy New England fishing town a hundred years ago. With an abundance of natural lighting and open airy space, this level is complete with authentic antique barn wood siding as flooring, an abundance of authentic antique farm house décor including hides, thick braided ropes and block and tackle, plus your first glance of the loft bridge inviting adventurers to come up and explore the loft and ships tower.

This floor houses two private bedrooms containing queen size beds plus a full size iron bed under the loft bridge that can be cordoned off to semi-private status with a quick pull of a curtain wall and a pull-out sofa in the lounging area. The bathroom continues the old farm house theme with its antique claw foot bath tub and vintage décor. The lounging area on the second floor is a cozy corner with a sofa and futon nestled under Native American Indian décor. The cable TV, DVD and VCR Player live here along with dozens of assorted blockbuster VHS movies for your viewing enjoyment. Walk outside onto the covered second floor veranda which overlooks the woodland vista where one may sit and lounge while sipping ice teas or other beverages of choice. Complete with light and ceiling fan, this is the perfect place to relax outside, rain or shine.

Loft Level and Ships Tower
The sturdy colorful ships ladder leads up to the loft from the second floor. A small wooden gate protects the opening into the loft at the top of the ladder. The loft contains two separate sleeping quarters with queen beds and night stands. Although the head room in the loft area is low, it offers enough clearance to easily access the sleeping quarters. Across the loft bridge lined with thick rope and ranch throw rugs, the ships tower anticipates the arrival of young explorers and their imaginations. The nautical tower itself harbors authentic turn of the century nautical gear such as a large nautical rose compass and ships wheel. The nautical tower is accessed through a relatively small opening and short step assembly and is intended as an imaginative escape for youth and limber adults only.

Heating and Cooling
Seven Timbers stays remarkably cool in the middle of summer. It is very well insulated but mainly because the entire first floor is an exposed painted concrete slab that maintains the soil temperature of around 70 degrees. The ground floor stays around 72 degrees inside and its best not to open the windows and doors on that level during the mid summer day so that the slab temperature is maintained as much as possible. There are also 5 ceiling fans on the main level so it stays quite cool in there even in the middle of summer.

There are window air conditioners in each of the 3 private bedrooms for comfortable sleeping. Using open windows that have screens on them, the 3rd floor loft uses fans to propel the warmer air out the roof skylight windows and draw the cooler air up into the loft area. Besides the fact it is generally cooler in the mountains and the cabin is surrounded by nothing but shady trees on all sides that keeps the outside ambient temperature pretty cool.

In cooler weather, the house is heated by a genuine Fischer cast iron wood burning stove right in the center of the main ground level. This stove can heat the entire house in a matter of hours so be sure to regulate the heat output as can heat the house up to more than 80 degrees!! In addition, gas wall heaters and electric floor heaters warm other parts of the cabin for quick heating when required. Please use these sparingly as they do use a significant amount of gas and electricity. The cast iron stove is the primary heat source for the house and its fun to use and beautiful to watch!

The Property
There is a large parking area sufficient for half a dozen vehicles or more, plus a fire pit surrounded by wooden Adirondack chairs and a custom picnic table, creating your own private outdoor lounging area inviting you to begin your relaxation before you even walk through the door. The entire property is comprised of 35 acres of pristine mountain woodland wrapped with visible hiking trails and lined with creeks and waterfalls where guests can explore and embody the essence of the Appalachian lifestyle without ever having to get into the car and drive away. Even a grassy playing field sits above Seven Timbers for playing Frisbee, baseball, football or any other activity requiring flat ground and soft grass.

Around the vicinity of Seven Timbers is a wooden platform where a native Indian TeePee used to reside and a short walk from there stands an old outhouse for the extreme outdoor adventurer. While standing in the woodland near the TeePee platform, you can almost imagine hearing distant Indian chanting riding the breeze through the tree canopies. The primary stream at the south end of the property is Talking Rock Creek which flows into Carters Lake several miles away. A smaller creek, West Fork Creek, borders the west end of the property and flows into Talking Rock Creek.

At one location upstream on Talking Rock Creek there is a series of small water cascades that appear almost to emanate from the remains of an old grist mill. The rocky walls of the mill guard the beginning of a gentle waterfall and exploring further downstream one can discover the rocky wall remains of what appears to be the anchor for a large water wheel. Along the creek bank trails are numerous locations for picnicking, swimming or wading. At one point during the trail you will cross a series of hand cut timbers acting as log bridges across the creek. Adventurers be cautioned, these bridges do not have hand rails and may be slippery at times. We’ve only seen smaller and immature sized creek fish in these headwaters but many other fun types of creek life scuttle along between the river rocks and clear pools. Adventurers may be able to find some creek fish hiding in a deep pool under a waterfall somewhere. There are countless species of plant and native fauna that live in the woodland and around the creek and waterfalls. Deer and wild turkey are common as are various forms of stream life. Bird watchers would love to perch on top of one of the bluffs to watch over the stream valley for colorful and varied bird life.

The whole family had fun relaxing here. We stayed for 3 nights but i wish we could have stayed longer. Thanks for letting us stay in this nice cabin.

Response by KZ Cabins: We are happy you enjoyed the cabin, relaxing and hiking around the beautiful 30 acres of property. We hope you can come back again soon and stay longer this time!

Stayed 3 nights in April, 2009. "It would be great to have a sponge at the kitchen sink! Beds were moderately comfortable. Otherwise we had a lovely stay! Thank you!"

Response by KZ Cabins: Thank you for your great ratings and feedback. To keep our rental rates as low as possible, we only supply a basic startup supply of a few consumables for your convenience. We are working on introducing a series of consumable baskets that guests can purchase and have delivered to the cabin prior to their arrival so they can ensure more of their preferred consumable items are available at arrival like sponges, condiments and paper products. As for the beds, we haven't received any prior complaints but we understand that each guest is different and what is comfortable for one may not be for another. We hope you come back for another visit real soon!

Stayed 3 nights in October, 2008. All of the communication for reservations, directions, etc. was wonderful between KZ and myself. The cabin was perfect for the weekend with 3 boys! Having the book of information along with maps of the property was a huge help in navigating around. Thanks!

Response by KZ Cabins: We're totally psyched that you enjoyed the cabin with the boys. We try hard to make the booking process easy and fast and try to ensure our guests have all the information they could need at the cabin - afterall, we understand fully that our guests don't know these neck of the woods (and mountains) quite like we do. Hope to see you and the boys again soon!

Stayed 4 nights in September, 2008. this was the best cabin i have stayed in. this was just the peace my family and i were looking far. it is hard enough when we had to leave our homes and evacuate for the hurricane. but this cabin put us at ease, and really enjoyed our time there. i would recommend this to anyone who is looking for some quiet time, or even if you have kids, they will also have a blast( yes we had 11 with us ) i thought we were going to go crazy but there was plenty to do to keep them busy. !! thanks again Andres and thanks home owner.

Response by KZ Cabins: We sure are happy you enjoyed this awesome property. I know its cumbersome to evacuate from hurricane paths especially with a big crowd and kids and we're glad you were able to spread out and relax. We hope to see you again soon and hopefully not because of mother nature!

Stayed 2 nights in October, 2008. Great place for a large group or family. We had 13 family members and had a great time. Plenty of room for everyone!

Response by KZ Cabins: That's exactly how we feel too! We're so happy you had a great time and we hope to see you again soon!

We visited 7 Timbers (aka The Barn) for a celebration of 50th Wedding Anniversary for my parents. We had 7 adults and 3 children and all enjoyed our stay. Well equipped with 2 fridges, 2 dishwashers, 2 ovens, 2 grills and plenty of space for a large party. Window unit air conditioners in downstairs bedroom plus 2 upstairs bedrooms, but loft rooms were comfortable even in mid-June with fans provided. Lots of character in the layout of the cabin and the decor, plenty of kitchen supplies (plates, glasses, pots/pans). Overall a lot of fun and perfect for the retreat we had planned. May not be for everyone as it is a little rustic/eclectic (clawfoot tubs, etc.) but you'll enjoy yourself and relax as much as we did and you'll not find another place like this one ever. We're looking forward to trying it in the fall/winter and are discussing having an annual trip we had such a good time.

Response by KZ Cabins: Awesome feedback, Thanks! Can't wait for your return!
